When my mother-in-law was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease, it was a shock for all of us in the family. She had always been very active and to see her slowly degenerate to the situation she is in currently is quite difficult. Gradually, it became more and more difficult for us to encourage her to use the system. I continued my research online and realized that there were other alternatives. Instead of using her eyes, a laser could be used to point to the Alphabet Board. I decided to create the solution by modifying quality lasers pointers to ensure that they are safe to use.
Using switches are easy so long as the user has mobility functions that allow him to press them without much difficulty. Operating a tablet with switches is not as easy as using a touch screen. It does require some getting used to. Augmentative or Assistive Technology or AAC can help people overcome their disabilities to communicate to their loved ones. People with MND have a variety of options as their muscles weaken and their movement becomes more restrictive.
